About this tool

What is the Robots Meta Tag Generator?

A robots meta tag generator outputs the meta tag and equivalent HTTP header for directives such as noindex, nofollow, nosnippet and max-snippet. These directives control indexing and how much of your page can be shown.

It runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you paste or upload is sent to a server or stored.

Guide

How to read the result and act on it

The generator gives you a meta tag for the HTML head and an equivalent X-Robots-Tag header. Use the meta tag for normal pages and the header for files like PDFs. Check each directive matches your intent: noindex keeps a page out of results, nofollow asks crawlers not to follow its links, nosnippet blocks text snippets, and max-snippet, max-image-preview and max-video-preview set limits on how much can be shown. For pages that should rank normally, you usually need no tag at all, because index and follow are the default. Add the tag in your template or SEO plugin and then verify it with a noindex or header checker.

Common mistakes to avoid

Adding noindex to a page that also has a robots.txt block means crawlers never see the tag. Applying a sitewide noindex through a template can silently remove the whole site from results. Using nosnippet or very low max-snippet values on pages you want featured limits how they can appear in search, including in features that quote page text. Another mistake is using nofollow on internal links to sculpt equity, which is not a useful tactic. Do not generate a tag and forget to test it live. Remember that directives apply per crawler if you name one, so check the crawler value matches your goal.

Questions, answered

If a page is not useful in search, noindex or removing it is cleaner than leaving it indexable.
No. The tool runs in your browser and nothing is stored or sent to a server. The tag and header appear on screen for you to copy and place on your pages.
Major search engines support the core directives like noindex and nofollow, but support for newer or specific ones such as max-image-preview can vary. Check each engine's documentation for the directives you rely on.
