Guide

How to read the result and act on it

Good output is a short, specific description of what the image shows and why it matters on that page. Read the suggestion against the picture: it should name the subject, action or data in plain words, and drop phrases like "image of" or "picture of". For a chart, mention the main takeaway; for a product, include the model, colour or feature visible; for a logo, state the brand name. Include a keyword only where it fits the description naturally. Then add the text to the image's alt attribute in your CMS, and use an empty alt for purely decorative images so screen readers skip them. Review the page afterwards by tabbing through it or running an accessibility check.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most frequent mistake is stuffing keywords into alt text, producing lines like "seo seo tools best seo". This helps nobody and hurts accessibility. Another is reusing one description for many different images, or leaving the filename as the alt value. Avoid describing details that the surrounding text already covers in full; add what the image contributes. Do not put important text only inside an image without repeating it in the alt or page copy. Also avoid very long descriptions; if an image needs a long explanation, such as a complex diagram, provide it in the visible text nearby and keep the alt concise.
